Thought of the Week: Vayeitzei -5781

LADDER LOCATION

Yaakov's dream of the ladder is one of the most well-known images of the Torah.  Drawn into children’s books, and etched into adults' minds, the imagery that symbolizes the eternal connection of humans to the sublime is an integral part of our faith.

Commentators note that the ascending angels symbolize prayers that make their way to heaven, while the descending ones represent the guidance we receive from above.  However, what is important to remember is that "The Place" mentioned in the verse is actually Mount Moriah, the location where the future Temple will stand.

Although we do not have that structure standing there today, tradition teaches us that all of our prayers ascend to heaven through that "Gate to Heaven.”  Thus, throughout the ages, we have turned towards Yerushalaim in our Teffilot.

May we indeed merit to see it stand again and serve as a "house of prayer for all nations."
